Arizona Nurse Sentenced to 14 Years Over $69 Million Medicaid Fraud Scheme

A 54-year-old nurse practitioner, Rita Anagho, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison over a scheme that defrauded Arizona’s Medicaid agency of more than $69 million through an addiction treatment clinic. Prosecutors said her clinic submitted false and inflated claims between May 2022 and March 2023, receiving about $54.9 million. The scheme reportedly targeted vulnerable substance-use patients, including Native Americans enrolled in a programme with higher reimbursement rates. The court heard that illegal kickbacks were paid to sober-home operators for patient referrals. Anagho was also accused of directing former staff to create false medical records after the clinic was subpoenaed. She was ordered to pay $55 million in restitution, while funds in bank accounts and real estate assets were forfeited to the US government.
