Niger Stampede Deaths Expose a State Struggling With Neglect and Insecurity
The deaths of three women in a stampede during a reported cash distribution at the Niger State Government House have renewed concern about poverty and the treatment of vulnerable residents. Two of the victims were reportedly internally displaced persons, while several others were injured. I argue that the tragedy reflects deeper failures in Niger State, including unsafe roads, bandit attacks, kidnappings, flooding and inadequate support for people displaced by violence. The recent reported deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody have also intensified public anger. Rather than relying on one-off cash sharing, the state government should prioritise security, motorable roads, sustainable jobs and dignified support for residents. State and federal authorities must work together to address the humanitarian and security challenges facing Niger State.
