Why Billions Budgeted for Nigerian Projects Often Do Not Reach Communities

Billions of naira are budgeted each year for roads, schools, hospitals, water schemes and other public projects. Yet many communities still contend with abandoned sites, incomplete buildings and projects that have stalled long after funds were approved. Delayed releases of funds, contract disputes, inflation, procurement concerns and weak monitoring can all undermine project delivery. When oversight is poor, projects may receive repeated allocations without visible progress or clear explanations for residents. The consequences go beyond wasted public funds. Delayed infrastructure limits access to healthcare, education, transport and economic opportunities, while unfinished structures can deteriorate and cost even more to repair. Citizens and civil society groups are demanding better project tracking, transparent procurement and public access to implementation records. The key question is no longer only how much is budgeted, but what Nigerians can actually see and use after the money is approved.
