NBA Says Lawyers Disciplined Abroad Can Still Practise in Nigeria
The Nigerian Bar Association says disciplinary action taken against a lawyer in another country does not automatically stop the person from practising in Nigeria. The association said sanctions are generally limited to the jurisdiction where they were imposed unless Nigerian regulators begin separate proceedings. The NBA spokesperson described reports of foreign disciplinary actions involving some Nigerian lawyers and public figures as disturbing. He said such cases may damage a lawyer’s reputation and raise wider concerns about professional ethics, even where the person remains licensed in Nigeria. He added that lawyers are not currently compelled to report foreign disciplinary actions to the NBA. The association said it needs to strengthen work on ethical standards and professional accountability within the legal profession.
