Ebonyi Proposes Death Penalty for Kidnapping After Monarch’s Killing
The Ebonyi State Government has sent an executive bill to the House of Assembly seeking to make kidnapping punishable by death by hanging, with no alternative sentence. Governor Francis Nwifuru announced the proposal during the funeral of HRH Eze Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike in Ikwo LGA. The monarch was abducted while travelling to church on March 1 and was reportedly killed the following day. Nwifuru said the proposed law would deter kidnapping carried out for political or financial reasons. He also pledged swift implementation of court judgments against anyone convicted over the monarch’s death. Tributes at the funeral described the late traditional ruler as an educationist, administrator and peacemaker who supported development in his community.
