Shettima Urges States to Build Electricity Markets as 17 Receive Regulatory Transfers
Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged state governments to develop their own electricity markets under the Electricity Act 2023, rather than depend solely on the Federal Government for power solutions. Speaking at a national electricity workshop in Abuja, he said states can attract private investors and create energy plans suited to their resources. He highlighted solar opportunities in Sokoto, Borno and Katsina; gas in Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa; and hydropower potential in Niger and Kebbi. Shettima said states need capable regulators and stronger consumer protection to tackle unfair billing and poor service. A representative of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission said regulatory transfers have been issued to 17 states, with Akwa Ibom the latest.
