Dredging Blamed as 16-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Ogoloma Community
A 16-year-old boy lost his life while swimming with friends at Derock Waterside in Ogoloma, Okrika LGA of Rivers State. He was swept away by a strong current on May 30 and could not be reached by rescuers, who struggled against the deeper waters caused by extensive dredging. Local task force commanders say dredging work has made the riverbank deceptively dangerous. Witnesses reported that the boy’s friends raised the alarm when they saw him in distress, but rescue efforts were hindered by the swift current. Authorities urged parents to warn children against swimming in unsafe parts of the river and to monitor their movements closely. The police have asked the boy’s family to file a formal report so an investigation can establish the full circumstances.
