Light Aircraft Crashes Into Beijing’s Landmark Skyscraper, Killing Pilot and Injuring 13
A light sport aircraft struck the CITIC Tower in Beijing’s Chaoyang District at about 5:55 pm on Friday. The pilot, the only person on board, was killed on impact. Thirteen people on the ground were injured and are receiving medical treatment. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the victims were inside the building or struck by falling debris. Images from the scene show shattered glass panels on an upper level of the 108-storey tower. Emergency crews secured the area and closed nearby roads. The aircraft has been identified as a Sunward SA60L Aurora registered B-12PP, which had taken off from an airport about 50 kilometres east of Beijing. Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into the rare crash. The incident is highly unusual given Beijing’s tightly controlled airspace and strict centre-city flight restrictions.
