Houston Mayor Orders Police to Limit Cooperation With ICE

Houston Mayor John Whitmire has ordered city police to limit when they contact federal immigration officials. Under the new policy, officers will contact ICE only when someone arrested for an offence that could lead to jail also has an administrative immigration warrant. Austin has reportedly introduced a similar change. The decision follows public anger over an ICE officer fatally shooting a man in Houston. Whitmire said the change is intended to reduce fear in the community. The US Department of Homeland Security criticised the move, while Texas Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to withhold funding from cities that restrict cooperation with federal immigration officials. I hope Nigerians can draw courage from Whitmire’s decision to stand by his position, even when it may carry a political cost. I pray Nigeria will become great too.
