Ghana Seeks BRICS Membership With India’s Support
Ghana says it will formally apply to join BRICS, seeking India’s support as it expands its trade and diplomatic partnerships beyond its traditional Western allies. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision during Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Accra. He said Ghana wants more development options and partnerships that can help it process more of its natural resources locally. BRICS has 11 full members, including South Africa, Egypt and Ethiopia. Ghana would become the fourth African full member if its application receives approval from the bloc. The development has also stirred comparisons with Nigeria’s economic direction, particularly over fuel subsidies, public borrowing, salaries and the cost of living.
