Benue Residents Block Road After 18 Mourners Are Allegedly Kidnapped
Residents of Tyomu community in Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State, blocked the Makurdi-Gboko Road to demand the rescue of 18 people reportedly kidnapped while travelling for a burial in Kogi State. The victims, said to be mostly women, were allegedly abducted on September 25 along the Makurdi-Naka-Adoka-Ankpa route. Families said the kidnappers demanded ₦30 million and that ₦3 million was raised and paid, but the victims were not released. Protesters carrying palm fronds blocked the road on September 29, leaving motorists stranded for hours. Benue officials confirmed the incident and said security agencies were working to trace the victims, although the exact number of people abducted had not yet been verified. The state government also urged transport operators to promptly report security incidents to the police, while residents were advised to avoid night travel on the route.
