INEC Yet to Publish Voters’ Register Online Ahead of 2027 Election, Raising Transparency Concerns
INEC is required under Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act to display the preliminary voters’ register for public scrutiny at registration areas and on its official website at least 90 days before a general election. With the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, concerns have grown over the register’s absence online. INEC’s spokesperson said the commission displayed the register at physical registration centres between October 9 and 15 and would use feedback and objections before publishing a final version by December 15. The lack of online access could make it harder for newly registered voters, people seeking corrections, and those unable to visit registration centres to confirm their details and raise objections in time. More than 10.7 million newly registered voters may need to verify their information and complete PVC-related steps before election day. The delay has renewed questions about INEC’s compliance with the law, public confidence in the electoral process, and whether Nigerians will have enough time to scrutinise the register before the election.
