Lagos Launches Nigeria’s First State Greenhouse Gas Registry

Lagos State has launched the Lagos Greenhouse Gas Registry, becoming the first sub-national government in Nigeria to introduce a digital platform for tracking emissions across key sectors. The registry will help the state measure, monitor, report and verify greenhouse gas emissions. Officials say the data will guide climate policies, strengthen accountability, improve air-quality management and support access to green investment and carbon-market opportunities. The platform was developed from a 2022 greenhouse-gas inventory that used 2019 as its baseline. The assessment estimated that poor air quality contributes to about 35,000 premature deaths in Lagos each year, highlighting the need for stronger emissions controls and cleaner environmental practices. Lagos says the initiative supports Nigeria’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and its energy-transition plans.
