Before the Next Election, What Must Outgoing Governments Account For?

As an administration nears the end of its tenure, voters should look beyond fresh campaign promises and examine its record. Citizens can ask what the government inherited, what it promised, what it delivered and how public funds were managed. Key questions should cover completed and abandoned projects, contract awards, project costs, public debt, government revenue and spending on education, health, security, infrastructure and social programmes. Unfinished projects should come with clear records of their status, outstanding payments and what is required to complete them. Political claims should be supported with evidence. Job-creation figures, new schools and infrastructure projects can be checked against public records and what exists on the ground. A proper handover should allow citizens to assess performance before deciding who deserves their vote next.
