BKO Says El-Rufai Has Received Limited Support During Detention
Journalist Babajide Kolade-Otitoju has said former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai appears to have received less public support from political allies than he may have expected during his detention. He also speculated that El-Rufai may have expected stronger public protests across Northern Nigeria. Kolade-Otitoju criticised the bail conditions in one of El-Rufai’s cases, describing them as difficult to meet. A Federal High Court in Abuja reportedly granted bail of ₦100 million with a surety in like sum, including property documentation in Maitama or Asokoro. The court later declined an application to vary the conditions. He further questioned the silence of some former political associates and beneficiaries of El-Rufai’s administration. Separately, the ICPC has arraigned El-Rufai and former aide Jimi Lawal on an amended 11-count charge linked to an alleged ₦8.68 billion CCTV contract. Both men pleaded not guilty, and the allegations remain before the court.
