Lagos Teen Cleared After Nearly Four Years in Custody Over Slippers Case
A Lagos teenager has been discharged and acquitted after spending nearly four years in custody over an allegation linked to slippers similar to those of a complainant. According to Citizens Gavel, he and another man arrested during a police raid were detained from 2022 without being promptly brought before a court. The organisation discovered their cases during a 2024 prison visit and began legal representation. After several adjournments and a transfer between courts, the prosecution reportedly failed to produce witnesses or establish a case. The court upheld a no-case submission and cleared both men. The case has renewed concerns about prolonged pretrial detention, access to legal representation and delays in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
