US Report Flags Nigeria’s Fiscal Transparency Gaps, Not “Fiscal Dishonesty”
A recent US Fiscal Transparency Report did not declare Nigeria “fiscally dishonest,” despite claims built around that phrase. The report says Nigeria failed to meet all minimum transparency requirements. It identified gaps in budget reporting, procurement disclosure, spending reconciliation and the independence of the Auditor-General. It also noted areas of progress, including the publication of key budget documents, public-debt disclosures, a sovereign wealth fund backed by a legal framework, and procedures for awarding natural-resource licences and contracts. Nigeria’s shortcomings deserve scrutiny and reform. However, failing a US transparency benchmark is not the same as being officially labelled corrupt or fiscally dishonest. The report should be cited accurately, without politically convenient exaggeration.
