NAPTIP Uncovers Alleged Baby Trafficking Ring in Cross River

NAPTIP says it has uncovered an alleged child-trafficking operation involving newborn babies in Cross River State. Four women were arrested after community members stopped a vehicle carrying three women and a baby in Obubra. Investigators allege that three of the women falsely claimed to have undetectable pregnancies and arranged with midwives to obtain babies. One suspect from Akwa Ibom is accused of stealing a week-old baby girl and selling her for ₦3 million. NAPTIP said the biological mother has been traced in Akwa Ibom and the child was confirmed to have been stolen. The agency suspects those arrested may be linked to baby-factory activities, and says the case will be taken to court, with further proceedings expected in October.
