UK Tribunal Blocks Deportation of Nigerian Convicted in Driving Licence Fraud Case
A UK immigration tribunal has stopped the Home Office from deporting Nigerian national Tunde Lawal Alao after he completed a 31-month prison sentence for a fake driving licence fraud scheme. Alao was convicted in June 2022 of conspiracy to defraud the public over attempts to produce fraudulent driving licences between 2019 and January 2022. He was released in 2023, after which the Home Office sought to return him to Nigeria. Upper Tribunal Judge Priya Solanki ruled that the Home Office had not shown that Alao currently posed a genuine and sufficiently serious threat to the public. The decision also considered evidence that he had been employed since October 2023 and was rebuilding his life after prison.
