2031: Could Kwankwaso and Obi Clash Over an NDC Presidential Ticket?
I do not believe Kwankwaso is positioning himself to serve as Peter Obi’s running mate in 2027. In my view, he is focused on rebuilding his political base in Kano and strengthening his structure ahead of 2031. I expect Kwankwaso to emerge as one of the leading northern presidential contenders if the presidency returns to the North in 2031. That could create a major zoning dispute within the NDC if both he and Obi remain in the party. Kwankwaso could argue that Obi had his opportunity during a southern turn, while he is entitled to the ticket when it returns to the North. This may leave Obi seeking another platform, potentially creating a divided race involving an APC candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso and Obi. How would Obi supporters react if the NDC zones its 2031 presidential ticket to Kwankwaso and he chooses a different running mate?
