Fish Feed Prices Rise from ₦5,300 to ₦18,600 as Farmers Question Inflation Data
I analysed the price of a popular 6mm fish feed used by many Nigerian catfish farmers. Before fuel subsidy removal, a 15kg bag sold for about ₦5,300. After the policy announcement and its economic shock, the price rose to about ₦16,000 per bag. Demand dropped sharply, forcing suppliers to adjust. Many fish farmers then noticed slower fish growth, with production cycles stretching from about four months to as long as seven months. In my view, this suggests that feed quality was reduced even as prices increased. The same bag now sells for around ₦18,600, despite the reported reduction in quality. I believe this example shows the pressure inflation has placed on agricultural businesses. I will also examine similar effects in the building and chemical sectors.
