Kwankwaso, Atiku and the Opposition’s 2027 Unity Problem

Rabiu Kwankwaso has urged Atiku Abubakar to step aside, arguing that the opposition needs a different path to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. His remark that Atiku should return to his role as Waziri Adamawa and be “taken care of” drew criticism for its tone. An ADC chieftain, Chile Igbawua, challenged Kwankwaso’s comments during an Arise News discussion, particularly any suggestion about Atiku’s health. The wider issue, however, is whether Atiku remains the opposition figure with the best chance of leading a united challenge. Atiku’s supporters point to his place within the ADC, while critics recall how disagreements over zoning and candidacy weakened the PDP before the 2023 election. They argue that the opposition cannot simply repeat the same divisions and expect a different outcome. The real test is whether Atiku, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso and other opposition leaders can agree on a candidate and a common strategy. Until then, the opposition may remain divided by the same ambitions it needs to overcome.
