NCC Begins Device Verification to Block Fake Phones, Modems and PoS Terminals From Networks
The Nigerian Communications Commission has started electronically verifying SIM-enabled devices to stop fake, cloned and non-compliant phones, modems, tablets and PoS terminals from connecting to telecom networks. The commission said the system will confirm whether devices have received NCC type approval, which certifies that they meet Nigeria’s technical standards before they are imported, sold or used. The framework was developed after consultations with telecom operators, manufacturers, importers, dealers, Customs and other stakeholders. Consumers have been advised to confirm that a device is NCC-approved before buying it. The NCC said the verification process uses device identifiers such as IMEI numbers only for regulatory compliance and cannot access users’ messages, photographs, contacts, financial details or other personal content.
