Why Nigeria Must Protect Local Retailers While Regulating Foreign Competition

I believe Nigeria needs stronger and fairer rules to protect local retail trade. Retail and agriculture provide accessible jobs for many Nigerians, especially people who may not have the capital or skills needed to start larger businesses. Foreigners should be free to invest and do business legally. However, I am concerned when foreign manufacturers also dominate wholesale and retail outlets, compete directly with the traders they supply, and repatriate most of their profits. This can put local retailers, jobs and domestic spending at risk. Government policy should encourage fair competition, enforce product-quality standards and support Nigerian-owned businesses. The same protection given to sectors such as agriculture should be considered for retail, without turning economic policy into ethnic or regional rivalry. Nigeria needs policies that attract investment while ensuring that local traders can grow, employ people and reinvest in the economy.
