Outrage as Police Accused of Beating 80-Year-Old Royal Candidate to Death in Nkpor
The Anambra State Police Command has launched an inquiry into the death of 80-year-old Mr Paul Onwualu. Community sources say officers stormed his home in Nkpor amid a dispute over the Igweship title and beat him unconscious before bundling him into a police vehicle. He collapsed en route to Ogidi Police Station and was pronounced dead at Iyi-Enu Mission Hospital. Anthonia Onwualu, the widow, alleges the officers gained entry by scaling the fence and attacked her husband alongside individuals opposed to his bid. The traditional stool dispute is already being litigated at the High Court in Ogidi. In a statement, SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the officers involved are not attached to the Anambra command. Commissioner CP Ikioye Orutugu has appealed for calm and pledged a transparent investigation. The FCID is yet to respond to the allegations.
