Lagos Gives Telcos 30 Days to Verify Betting Operators’ Licences and Tax Compliance
The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority has given MTN, Airtel, Globacom, 9mobile and licensed value-added service providers 30 days to verify the licences and tax compliance of betting and gaming companies using their platforms. The affected firms must submit transaction records, carrier-billing data and revenue-sharing details for gaming operators from November 22, 2024, up to the date of the notice. They must also stop onboarding new gaming businesses without valid Lagos licences and suspend existing unauthorised services. The authority said a telecommunications or value-added service licence does not replace a Lagos gaming licence. It warned that companies and their principal officers could face enforcement action if their platforms support unlicensed betting operations. The directive comes as betting stakes are exempt from VAT under the Nigerian Tax Act 2025, although gaming operators remain responsible for applicable state gaming taxes and levies.
