US Lawmakers Condemn Rula Jebreal’s ‘Monkey’ Remark About Hakeem Jeffries
The Congressional Black Caucus has condemned Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal after she referred to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries as an “AIPAC monkey” and an “errand boy” during a podcast discussion about his support for Israel. The caucus said there is no non-racist way to use such language against a Black man. Several Democratic lawmakers, including Ayanna Pressley, Ritchie Torres and Jamaal Bowman, also described the remarks as unacceptable and rooted in anti-Black racist tropes. Jebreal said she did not intend the word “monkey” in a racist sense and cited the three wise monkeys as her reference. The controversy has nevertheless sparked wider debate about racism, antisemitism and standards of political discourse.
