New Enugu Smart City Must Put Planning and People Before Technology

New Enugu Smart City Must Put Planning and People Before Technology

New Enugu Smart City offers Enugu State an opportunity to demonstrate how planned urban development can improve quality of life, attract investment and protect the environment. Its success should be measured not by impressive buildings or digital tools alone, but by safer communities, efficient services, reliable infrastructure and inclusive public spaces. Abuja shows both the value of a strong master plan and the cost of weakening development controls over time. As planning exceptions multiply, congestion, infrastructure pressure and disorder can undermine the purpose of a planned city. New Enugu Smart City must therefore be protected by clear rules, professional standards and institutions that can outlast political administrations. Technology should support people, not replace sound governance. Smart transport, utilities, healthcare, environmental monitoring and emergency systems can improve daily life, but they must be matched with data privacy, cybersecurity, transparent land administration, community engagement and accountability. If its master plan is faithfully implemented, New Enugu Smart City could become a model for sustainable, people-focused urban development in Nigeria. The real test will be whether planning integrity is preserved against short-term political and commercial pressures.
