RIRS Seeks NNPC’s Books for Tax Audit, Sets September 2026 Timeline
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service have opened talks on stronger tax compliance, transparency and audit cooperation involving NNPC subsidiaries operating in Rivers State. RIRS Chairman Israel Egbunefu said tax remittances alone do not amount to full compliance until statutory audits and verification are completed. He said NNPC and its subsidiaries should make their books and records available to the state revenue agency to avoid enforcement measures. The NNPC tax team said its audit report is not yet ready but assured RIRS that the company would be prepared for a comprehensive audit in September 2026. Egbunefu also urged government ministries, departments and agencies to lead by example by meeting their tax obligations and cooperating with revenue authorities.
