Reps Propose Tougher Penalties for Power Infrastructure Vandals
The House of Representatives is considering tougher penalties for vandalising electricity infrastructure and encroaching on transmission corridors. Members of the House Committee on Public Assets raised the issue during inspections of the New Haven–Ninth Mile–Nsukka transmission line in Enugu State and the Egbu substation in Owerri, Imo State. They said vandalism and illegal buildings along transmission routes are delaying projects and weakening efforts to improve electricity supply. The committee called for stronger cooperation between federal and state authorities to protect power assets and enforce transmission rights of way. Lawmakers were also told that the Egbu 330/132/33KV substation is about 85 per cent complete and could add 250 megawatts to electricity supply in Imo State when finished.
