INEC Meeting Puts 2027 Party-Switching Candidates Under Scrutiny
INEC is holding a national stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue. The commission is expected to give updates on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, election logistics and measures to protect the integrity of the polls. Attention is also on politicians who changed parties after nomination processes had begun or ended. The Supreme Court recently restored Electoral Act provisions on party membership registers and candidate nominations, raising questions about the validity of tickets secured through defections, waivers and fresh primaries. The cases involving Rivers APC governorship candidate Kingsley Chinda, Delta Central NDC senatorial candidate Ovie Omo-Agege and other defectors may draw scrutiny. A lawyer, however, says the ruling does not automatically invalidate any nomination, as INEC would need to assess each case based on its specific facts and timelines.
