Japan to Hold 90-Minute Sleep Contest With £10,000 Prize
Japan will host a 90-minute sleep competition in Tokyo on October 5, 2026. Contestants will compete for ¥2.22 million, estimated at about £10,000, by recording the best sleep score. Participants will sleep on mattresses while wearable devices measure sleep depth, quality, how quickly they fall asleep and how stable their rest remains. About 20 people are expected in each of three rounds. Organisers will introduce planned distractions during the challenge to test whether contestants can maintain quality sleep. Applicants must be at least 20 and are barred from using sleeping medication or deliberately staying awake beforehand. The event is intended to draw attention to sleep deprivation and the importance of quality rest in Japan.
