Anambra LG Inauguration Faces Court Challenge Over Councillors’ Tenure
The planned inauguration of 21 newly elected local government mayors and councillors in Anambra State faces uncertainty following a court case filed by 56 serving councillors. The councillors argue that their tenure should last four years, not two. They want the Awka High Court to void provisions of Anambra laws that allow elected local government officials to be dissolved after two years. They are seeking to stop ANSIEC and other defendants from recognising or swearing in the new officials. The plaintiffs also want their positions and entitlements restored pending the outcome of the case, alongside ₦10 billion in general damages. The suit was reportedly not listed when it was expected to come up for hearing. Its outcome could determine whether the proposed inauguration proceeds and clarify the tenure of elected local government officials in Anambra State.
