Peter Obi Denies Leaving Anambra With $123.77m Debt, Cites DMO Records

I have no disagreement with Governor Chukwuma Soludo or any other governor. My concern is that Nigerians should focus on the economic hardship and other pressing challenges facing the country. I did not obtain commercial loans or issue bonds for Anambra while I was governor. The development facilities being described as debts I left behind were federal government-supported World Bank and IFAD programmes, with separate figures for funds approved, funds drawn and outstanding balances. DMO records showed Anambra's external debt at about $18 million when I assumed office in 2006, about $30 million when I left in March 2014, and about $45.15 million by December 2014. These figures, I argue, contradict the claim that I handed over $123.77 million in debt. When I left office, I also left more than $150 million in state investments. I maintain that the funds and their returns could have supported debt repayment and further development in Anambra.
