CBN Survey: Rising Living Costs Push Nigerians Away From Homes, Cars and Investments
Nigerian households grew more pessimistic about the economy and their personal finances in September 2026, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Household Expectations Survey. Overall consumer sentiment fell to -18.7 points from -9.9 in August. Many households said major purchases remain out of reach. Sentiment was negative for buying homes (-68.2), vehicles (-67.3), investments (-50.7), household appliances (-49.5) and rent (-32.0). The CBN said buying conditions for major purchases remained unfavourable. High prices are pushing families to focus on essentials such as food, transport, education, electricity and water. The survey found that households expect sentiment to improve gradually over the next six months, although inflation concerns remain widespread.
