A 1976 New Nigerian report quoted the late Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, former Grand Khadi of the Northern States, as opposing voting rights and elective office for women. Speaking after northern states announced that women could vote in forthcoming local government elections, Gumi argued that politics was the business of men.
