Houthi Escalation in the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia’s Role

The Houthis seized control of Yemen’s government institutions in 2014. Saudi Arabia then began airstrikes on Yemeni military sites, saying it wanted to prevent weapons from falling into Houthi hands. The Houthis later retained control of the capital as ceasefire talks took place. The recent escalation is also being linked to Saudi Arabia. Houthi officials were reportedly returning from the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader when Saudi Arabia bombed a runway, alleging they were transporting weapons. Houthi fighters have now taken control of strategic ports and key Red Sea routes. Saudi Arabia reportedly sought assistance from former US President Donald Trump, but its calls were ignored.
