Burna Boy Becomes First African Artist to Surpass 50M Monthly Spotify Listeners

Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, has made history by becoming the first African artist to exceed 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify. The 35-year-old Grammy winner hit the milestone on Monday, driven largely by his World Cup track “Dai Dai” with Shakira. The song has dominated the Spotify Global Top Songs chart for days. That collaboration also helped Shakira reach 100 million monthly listeners, making her the second Latino artist to do so. The “Dai Dai” video has also become the first to surpass 300 million YouTube views in 2026.

I notice most of those listeners probably streamed 'Dai Dai' during the World Cup, which might skew the numbers.

Now might be the time for upcoming Nigerian artists to focus on playlist pitching and regional collaborations to boost their own Spotify numbers.
