Why Some Niger Delta Minorities Reject Inclusion in an Igbo-Led Region

I believe some Igbo voices underestimate the historical concerns of Ikwerre people and other Niger Delta minorities. Their experiences of land, identity and political control have created deep resistance to being grouped into an Igbo-led region or political project. Many people in Rivers State view the civil war era through the lens of liberation from perceived Igbo dominance. The former name of Port Harcourt’s Liberation Stadium, its later renaming after Yakubu Gowon, and calls to commemorate Gowon are often seen as expressions of that history. In my view, these sentiments should not be dismissed. Any discussion about regional identity or self-determination must recognise that Niger Delta minority groups have distinct identities, histories and political choices.
