Makinde Extends Wage Award and Transport Subsidy for Oyo Workers by Three Months
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a three-month extension of the wage award for civil servants and continued the state’s transport subsidy. He said the measures are intended to reduce the effect of higher petrol prices and ease economic pressure on residents. Makinde said Oyo’s monthly wage bill has increased from about ₦4.5 billion in 2019 to ₦18 billion, while the minimum wage rose from ₦18,000 to ₦80,000. He asked the state government and labour leaders to keep working together on the economic challenges facing workers. The governor also praised Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal for overseeing the state while he was away. He criticised President Bola Tinubu for not formally handing over to the Vice-President during leave and dismissed allegations that Oyo’s €55 million French health loan would fund his presidential ambition, saying the facility is for healthcare infrastructure.
