Adamawa Court Jails Man for Abandoning Pregnant Secondary-School Girlfriend

An Upper Area Court in Ganye, Adamawa State, has sentenced Kabiru Umar to five years’ imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine, after he pleaded guilty to abandoning his pregnant secondary-school girlfriend. The girl and her father told the court that Umar had sought permission to marry her but later failed to provide for her after she became pregnant. The court ordered him to pay ₦73,000 for medical, feeding and antenatal expenses, ₦100,000 for nutritional support, ₦200,000 in legal fees and ₦20,000 monthly maintenance until delivery, unless another court varies the order. The judge said the ruling was intended to enforce responsibility and protect the welfare and dignity of women and children.
