Buratai Urges Africa to Build Homegrown Defence Technology Capacity
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has urged African countries to build independent defence technology capacity as artificial intelligence and autonomous systems reshape modern warfare. Speaking at the International Security Conference on Africa in Kigali, he said African nations must move from importing technology to developing, adapting and regulating systems for their own security environments. He called for stronger partnerships among governments, defence institutions, universities and technology firms. Buratai said increasing military autonomy raises questions about human control, accountability and the ethical limits of machine-led decisions. Citing lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, he urged investment in research, technical education and agile defence institutions rather than relying only on equipment purchases.
