Has Nigeria’s Political System Outgrown the Old Guard?

I believe Nigeria may be moving beyond the era when powerful political figures could dominate the national system through wealth, influence and force. Politicians such as Tinubu, Obasanjo, Atiku and Buhari represent an older political order shaped by military-era networks and entrenched oligarchies. As states become more self-reliant, governors may increasingly need a proven record of performance to gain national acceptance. In this kind of political climate, a governor like Alex Otti could have an advantage because of his reputation for governance, while leaders without visible results may struggle to build wider support. I see Peter Obi as part of a newer generation of politicians whose strength comes more from organic popularity than control of the political system. This could make it harder for any single figure to monopolise Nigerian politics again.
