Hamzat Addresses Lagos Rent, Transport and Touting Concerns Beyond Viral Remark
Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat addressed concerns about rent, low incomes, street harassment and public transport during a radio interview. He said home ownership schemes could allow eligible residents to pay gradually, while proposed tenancy reforms would limit advance rent for new tenants to one year before monthly payments begin. On the backlash over his comment that some young workers may live with relatives, Hamzat acknowledged that rent above 40 percent of a person’s income is difficult to sustain. He urged young people to save where possible, while arguing that higher wages and a stronger economy remain necessary. He also described touting and harassment of lawful workers as crimes, urging residents and content creators to report incidents. On transport, he cited the destruction of buses during the EndSARS crisis and said Lagos must combine government services with private buses, ferries and rail. The real test, however, is whether the housing, transport and enforcement systems deliver for residents.
