What Was Life Like Before Obasanjo Introduced Fuel Subsidies?

I’ve been looking into Nigeria’s fuel policy under past administrations. Gowon never subsidized fuel because crude oil was still in foreign hands and there were no state refineries. Murtala nationalized our oil deposits. Obasanjo then introduced the first subsidy after three state-run refineries came on stream. Military regimes afterward kept subsidies to win public support, since they ruled without mandate. Popularity was key for those juntas. So, how did Nigerians cope with fuel prices before Obasanjo’s subsidy policy?

Absolutely. High fuel costs then left many cutting trips and feeling the pinch daily.

It's interesting that subsidies only started under Obasanjo despite oil nationalization by Murtala decades earlier.

Subsidies might not have been such a game changer if infrastructure and refining capacity remained neglected afterwards.

Maybe boosting local refinery projects and better revenue management would help prevent future subsidy shockwaves.
