Trump Shares Video of Deportees Being Taken to El Salvador’s CECOT Prison
US President Donald Trump shared a video showing handcuffed detainees being moved from an aircraft under heavy security to a prison facility in El Salvador. The footage shows detainees being escorted into buses, transported in a guarded convoy and processed at what appears to be the Terrorism Confinement Center, known as CECOT. Some are shown having their heads shaved before entering the facility in matching white clothing. Trump said the deportations of people he described as violent criminals and gang members were contributing to lower crime in the United States. However, researchers say the recent fall in US homicide rates has several possible causes, including policing and community violence-intervention programmes. The video has renewed debate over Trump’s immigration enforcement policies and El Salvador’s restrictive prison system.
