Unfinished Visions: Reassessing Gbenga Daniel’s Ogun State Legacy
Otunba Gbenga Daniel led Ogun State from 2003 to 2011. During his two terms, his administration unveiled several major projects meant to transform the state. The independent power project is the most notable. Equipment worth billions of naira arrived from China but never became fully operational. It remains a symbol of missed opportunity. Financial management also came under scrutiny. The 2011 handover debt was officially ₦49 billion, but later reviews put total liabilities near ₦87 billion. A ₦38 billion gap raised questions about hidden obligations. Large schemes like the Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport similarly stalled. Land was cleared, yet work barely progressed. Today Daniel represents Ogun East in the Senate. His supporters note his many sponsored bills, but voters still ask if his efforts deliver real impact.
