Advocate Demands Accountability After 37 Suspected Illegal Miners Die in Niger Custody

A human-rights advocate has called for a transparent investigation after 37 suspected illegal miners reportedly died while in custody in Niger State. She said authorities must establish the cause of the deaths and hold anyone responsible accountable. She added that the government has a duty to protect the safety and wellbeing of everyone in detention, regardless of the allegations against them. The advocate also urged authorities to provide rehabilitation, reparation and reintegration for survivors, while supporting families affected by the tragedy. Niger State has declared three days of mourning over the incident.
