Russia Orders Closure of German Cultural Centres and St Petersburg Consulate
Russia has ordered German cultural centres in Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg to close. It also withdrew permission for Germany's consulate in St Petersburg to operate, escalating a diplomatic dispute with Berlin. Moscow said the move was retaliation for Germany's closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the end of the Russian cultural centre's lease in Berlin. Russia linked the dispute to Germany's accusations over an alleged drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which Moscow denies. The confrontation comes amid wider European accusations of Russian sabotage and hybrid operations connected to the war in Ukraine. Russia has rejected the claims and accused European governments of escalating tensions.
