Wike Clarifies Hyperbolic TV Threat: ‘I Didn’t Mean to Shoot’

Nyesom Wike, the FCT minister, has explained his recent remark against Channels TV anchor Seun Okinbaloye. He had said he would “break his TV screen and shoot” the journalist over comments about a one-party system. In a statement from his media aide, Wike said the comment was purely hyperbole. He stressed he had no literal intention to use a gun. The minister and Okinbaloye later spoke by phone and reached a mutual understanding. Amnesty International had condemned the original statement as “reckless and violent.” Wike urged the public not to use his words for “blackmail and propaganda.”
